The POD X Story: Founded 2012, One of the First in Mini Jump Starters by 2013
Sep 14, 2026
Short version: POD X, Power On Demand, was founded in 2012 in Ventura County, California, and in 2013 became one of the first companies selling compact lithium jump starters in the United States, at a time when most drivers had never heard of one and "jump starter" still meant a twenty-pound lead-acid box. The idea came from a dead battery in Joshua Tree with no cell signal. More than a decade later, the same idea runs the company: gear that works when everything else fails, backed by the longest warranty in the category.
2012: a dead battery and no signal
The company began the way most useful things do, with a bad night. Our founder was stranded in Joshua Tree with a dead battery, no other car in sight, and no cell service to call one. That is a specific kind of helpless. Getting out took a lucky stranger and a long wait, and the drive home turned into a question: why does a car battery still depend on a second car?
Power On Demand was founded that year to answer it. The answer already existed in a lab: lithium cells could deliver the burst of current an engine needs from a pack the size of a paperback. Almost nobody was selling them to ordinary drivers.
2013: the first POD
In 2013 we put one of the first compact lithium jump starters in front of the American public, back when the pitch had to start with explaining what it was. The original Power On Demand unit did three things: start a car without another car, charge a phone, and light the way. That combination is now standard in the category. In 2013 it was the whole argument. Early customers were the people who needed it most: fleet drivers, boaters, overlanders, and people who parked outside in the cold. They bought one, it saved them once, and they bought one for their spouse. That is still how most POD X units are sold. The industry noticed too: POD products have earned multiple industry and consumer-electronics awards for design, durability, and innovation since 2012.
What thirteen years taught us
Reliability beats features. A jump starter that fails once is worse than no jump starter, because you trusted it. Every product we make is tested in the conditions it will actually see: freezing trailheads, hot trunks, dark shoulders in the rain. The moment you need it is the worst possible time for it to fail, so it cannot.
One tool should do several jobs. The jump starter that is also a power bank and a flashlight became the template for everything after it: the survival axe with fifteen tools in the handle, the headlamp beanie with speakers, the dry bag that charges your phone. Gear that earns its space in a kit.
Stand behind it or do not sell it. Every POD X product carries a 3-year warranty with free registration, the longest in portable power. We use this gear ourselves, and a warranty is just what it looks like when a company believes its own product.
From jump starters to everything that keeps you ready
The jump starter is still the heart of POD X. Around it, the line grew into what a prepared person actually carries: survival and first aid kits, forged axes and knives with custom engraving, rechargeable lighting and reusable LED flares, off-grid and Starlink power, and worksite safety gear for the crews that keep trucks moving. The Trail Tech Crate delivers it a quarter at a time.
Where we are from matters
POD X is headquartered in Ventura County on the California coast, in wildfire, earthquake, and El Niño country. That is why our disaster readiness guides are written the way they are: not as marketing, but as the checklists we use ourselves. When we tell you a jump starter belongs in a wildfire go-bag, it is because ours is in one.
Who trusts POD X
More than 2,500 customers: everyday drivers, fleet managers, towing companies, first responders, outdoor guides, overlanders, and preppers. Our products are sold on thepodx.com, Amazon, and Walmart, and through authorized resellers and fleet programs.
The promise, more than a decade on
Nobody should ever feel that helpless again. It was the mission on the drive home from Joshua Tree in 2012 and it is the mission now. If you have a POD X story from the field, we want it: share it here.
